The Palazzo Braschi is a palace in the Parione district of the Italian capital Rome .

The palace is a neoclassical building and is located between Piazza Navona , Corso Vittorio Emanuele II street and Piazza di Pasquino . In the palace is the municipal Museo di Roma .

The palace was built by order of Luigi Braschi Onesti , a nephew of Pope Pius VI. The design was done by the architect Cosimo Morelli . In 1790 the Braschi site was acquired with financial support from his uncle. The 16th century palace previously on the property, which Giuliano da Sangallo had built for Francesco Orsini , was demolished. During the Napoleonic occupation of Rome, the building project was suspended from February 1798. The works of art located there were confiscated by the French. In 1809, Braschi Onesti moved into the palace and became mayor of Rome. He died in 1816 when the palace was not yet completed. As the family fortunes of the Braschis were exhausted, the building remained unfinished until 1871. Eventually the Braschi family sold the palace to the Italian state and the palace was completed. During the fascist period under Benito Mussolini , the Ministry of the Interior and the political headquarters of Mussolini were located there until 1925. After the end of the Second World War, refugee families were housed in the palace. In 1952 the city museum Museo di Roma (local history museum) of the city of Rome was housed in the building.
