Lothar Burchardt

Lothar Burchardt (born February 7, 1939 in Frankfurt / Oder ) is a German historian .

Live and act

Lothar Burchardt lived with his family in eastern Neumark until 1945 . After a year of flight and displacement, the family settled in Eberbach am Neckar , where he also attended elementary school and high school. In an exchange year 1955/56 he passed the final exam at a California high school . After graduating from high school in 1957, he studied history, Latin and English at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen . In 1964 he passed his state examination (teaching qualification). In 1966 he started working for Werner Conze in Heidelberg with the work of Peace Economy and War Preparedness. Germany's economic Armaments efforts before 1914 for Dr. phil. PhD. After studying economics , he was a research assistant at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, later at the University of Mannheim . From 1969 he worked at the University of Konstanz , where he completed his habilitation in 1973. From 1974 he was a university lecturer in Konstanz. In 1979 he was appointed to the professorship for modern history and economic and social history at the University of Konstanz. He held several visiting professorships at the University of Massachusetts (USA) and York University (Canada).

The focus of his scientific work is the history of science policy and science funding in Germany. In addition, he deals with military history in the 19th and 20th centuries. Century. The regional focus is the contemporary history of southwest Germany. He is a member of the Seemuseum Foundation in Kreuzlingen .

In January 2012, a “report on the work of Dr. Bruno Helmle (1911–1996) during the Nazi era and in the first post-war years “presented to the University of Konstanz by Lothar Burchardt, Jürgen Klöckler and Wolfgang Seibel . The report comes to the conclusion that Helmle was far more involved in the Nazi system than an initial suspicion from 2010 would suggest; the honors Honorary Senator of the University of Konstanz (1976) and Honorary Citizen of Konstanz (1980) was withdrawn from Helmle.

Burchhardt is committed to the free voters in Constance. His son Ulrich Burchardt ( CDU ) was elected Lord Mayor of Konstanz on July 15, 2012.
