Anne White (born September 28, 1961 in Charleston , West Virginia , United States ) is a former American tennis player .

Career

Beginnings

Anne White is the daughter of Pete White, who played basketball for Clendenin High School . At nine, she was 29th on the national tennis rankings for under twelve and was later to be found in the top ten of the junior rankings. At the age of 19 she won all three competitions (singles, doubles, mixed) at the national amateur tennis championships.

Professional career

White was able to win a total of eight tournaments on the WTA Tour in the course of her career , one in singles and seven in doubles. She also reached five other finals (one in singles, four in doubles). In Grand Slam tournaments, her greatest successes were reaching two rounds of 16 in singles and semi-finals in doubles. In the mixed competition, White achieved her best result at Wimbledon in 1985 with the quarter-finals. Her best placements were 19th and 18th in the tennis world rankings .

Wimbledon 1985

Anne White achieved greater fame through her appearance in the first round of the individual competition at Wimbledon in 1985 . After she warmed up in a tracksuit, she went to the match against Pam Shriver in a tight-fitting catsuit . Due to darkness, the match was interrupted at the stand of one set each and White was asked by the referee to continue the game the next day in more appropriate clothing. She lost the crucial third set the next day, but the incident received widespread attention. In a later interview, Anne White said she didn't expect her clothing choices to be so controversial.
