The MWS is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). DHI Warsaw was founded in 1993 and is based in Warsaw's Karnicki Palace on Aleje Ujazdowskie . The founding director was Rex Rexheuser (1993–1998), followed by Klaus Ziemer (1998–2008) and Eduard Mühle(2008-2013). Miloš Řezník has held this office since April 1, 2014 .

Work & Organization

The task of the institute is to conduct scientific research into the history of Poland and its interdependencies in a European and transregional context. In addition, the institute promotes historical discourse on a national and international level and in particular provides information and results from German history in the host country, as well as from Polish history in Germany. It is also dedicated to promoting young academics in the field of historical research on Poland and East Central Europe.

Since the beginning of 2017, the DHI Warsaw has had a branch in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, which supports research on the history of Lithuania in the Central and Eastern European context as well as on Lithuania's historical ties with Germany, Poland and other countries in the region. A second branch office was opened in spring 2018 in close cooperation with a branch of the Collegium Carolinum Munich and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague and supports scientific research on Czech, German and Polish history in a European context.

The German Historical Institute Warsaw currently employs 32 people, 17 of whom are scientists, 13 of whom have doctorates and four who have completed their habilitation. In addition, the institute offers research and work opportunities to visiting scientists, scholarship holders and interns. The institute is managed by Miloš Řezník , the deputy director is Ruth Leiserowitz. A scientific advisory board, chaired by Philipp Ther since 2019 , advises the institute in all scientific matters.

Basic research

The German Historical Institute Warsaw conducts innovative basic research that looks at Polish history in its European context in all of its chronological depth and thematic breadth, but is designed as exemplary project research in concrete research practice. This is currently organized in five research areas:

  • Regionality and regional formation
  • Religion, Politics, and Economics in Premodern Poland
  • Imperial reconfigurations. Dynamics of State and Society in Poland and Lithuania in the “Long” 19th Century
  • Violence and Foreign Rule in the "Age of Extremes"
  • Functionality of History in the Late Modern Age

Both the individual projects of the academic staff and, if possible, the projects of scholarship holders, interns and visiting researchers are integrated into these research areas. In this way, they offer a common thematic problem horizon, which promotes fruitful work in the context of internationally compatible key questions for which the institute's specific resources and location advantages can be brought to bear in a special way.

Research transfer & scholarships

The German Historical Institute Warsaw supports the international historical discourse by promoting communication, cooperation and research transfer. The focus is on German-Polish historians' relations. But the mediation mandate also includes the neighboring East Central European historical sciences and addresses the Western scientific communities beyond German historical studies. In this sense, the institute offers a forum for international historical-scientific discussion. To this end, it uses proven instruments with scientific events, publications and grants.

Grants are awarded to support research work in the field of Polish, German-Polish and Polish-East Central European history that requires a stay in the institute's host countries. The scholarships are awarded for one or more months, depending on the research project. The award is based on excellence criteria. An additional selection criterion is the extent to which the research projects to be funded are thematically related to the current research areas of the German Historical Institute.

Publications

In four book series, the German Historical Institute Warsaw publishes its own and external research results and source editions on the history of Poland and the history of German-Polish relations. In addition, it publishes methodologically groundbreaking, fundamental studies of German and Polish historical studies on European, German and Polish history in German and Polish translation.

Library

The library of the German Historical Institute in Warsaw is a reference library with currently around 90,000 volumes and around 300 regularly referenced periodicals. Their task is to provide literature for the research carried out at the institute. Compared to the large historical specialist libraries in Warsaw, the library fulfills a complementary function. As part of her collecting commission, which encompasses the history of Germany, Poland and the history of German-Polish relations, she therefore places the emphasis on Western-language specialist literature and on the topics of the research areas located at the institute. The library is open to external visitors free of charge for face-to-face use. Your holdings can be fully researched online via the OPAC, the Electronic Journal Library (EZB) and the database information system (DBIS). In addition to print media, users also have access to electronic resources.
