Klaus Ziemer

Klaus Ziemer (born June 24, 1946 in Heidelberg ) is a German political scientist and former director of the German Historical Institute in Warsaw .

Klaus Ziemer studied political science, history and Latin at the universities of Heidelberg and Munich from 1966 to 1972 . From 1973 to 1987 he was a research assistant at the University of Heidelberg. There Ziemer received his doctorate in 1977 with the thesis Political Parties in Francophone Africa . In 1985 he completed his habilitation in political science in Heidelberg . From 1986 to 1991 he was deputy professor at the Universities of Essen , Munich, Mannheim and Trier . From 1991 until his retirement in 2011, Ziemer taught as a professor of political science at the University of Trier. Since 1998 he has also been Professor of Political Science at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw , from 1998 to 2008 he was also Director of the German Historical Institute and was on leave at Trier University during this time.

His main research interests are contemporary Polish history, German-Polish relations since 1945 and the change in the political system in Eastern Europe.

Ziemer has been the first chairman of the Heidelberg Partnership with Poland initiative since 2016 .
