Andrzej Jan Byrt (born September 20, 1949 in Poznań , Poland ) is a Polish economist and former diplomat and vice minister. Byrt was ambassador to Germany , France and Monaco .

Life

After studying at the University of Economics in Poznań (UEP), Byrt received his doctorate there in 1977 . From 1978 to 1986 he worked for the Poznań International Fair (MTP), first as Marketing Director, then since 1982 as General Director. Later he was an economic advisor at the Polish embassy in Brussels and then deputy minister (Polish wiceminister ) at the Ministry for Economic Cooperation.

From 1995 to 2001 Byrt was the first ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2001 he was appointed Undersecretary of State at the Foreign Ministry by Leszek Miller , but returned to Germany as Ambassador from 2002 to 2006. His successor in Berlin was Marek Prawda .

Byrt then advised the board of the MTP before he became chairman of the board of the trade fair and president of the Polish trade fair industry from 2009 to 2014. In January 2015 he was appointed Polish ambassador to France and Monaco, but was dismissed by the new PiS government in July 2016 .

Aleksander Kwaśniewski appointed Byrt to the advisory board of the “Amicus Europae” foundation . He was also a member of the Economics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences , the Polish Olympic Committee and the Commission for International Cooperation in Warsaw.

Honors

Byrt received the Great Federal Cross of Merit . In 1997 he was awarded the Officer's Cross and in 2011 the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta . In 2002, Estonia awarded the diplomat the Order of the White Star, Class II. In 2016 he received the title of 25th Honorary Doctor of the University of Economics in Poznan.

Others

Byrt's father came to Babelsberg as a slave laborer in November 1939 , he refused to participate in the accreditation of his son. He was the only ambassador who managed to get a car on the Cologne carnival procession. When the Polish embassy moved from Cologne to Berlin, it symbolically took off in a hot air balloon . He also invited Harald Schmidt to Poland.
