Boxhagener Coronation Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Boxhagener Krönungsbahn was a 2.2 km long railway line in what is now the city of Berlin , which led from the then Rummelsburg train station through the former Boxhagen estate to a train station on Frankfurter Chaussee (today Karl-Marx-Allee ) at the corner of Boxhagener Weg. The railway line was built solely for the reception of Wilhelm I , who was crowned King of Prussia in Königsberg on October 22, 1861.

history

The original plan was to have the king, who was crowned on October 18, 1861, and the family accompanying him, received by the dignitaries in Berlin at the Frankfurt train station of the Lower Silesian-Märkische Railway . Since the train station was within the city, but the king was supposed to move into the city for a festive occasion, a single-track railway line was built through undeveloped land along Boxhagener Weg (today Boxhagener Straße ) up to a few hundred meters from the Frankfurter Tor . At the end of it, roughly at the height of today's Kosmos event center , a magnificent train station was built. The construction of the railway line, which ran on a dam, took place within 14 days. After the line was approved on October 20, 1861, it was run several times on a trial basis before the king's court train arrived on October 22 at around 11.15 a.m. The train consisted of the locomotive with a tender No. 11 of the Lower Silesian-Märkische Eisenbahn (Borsig, 1867), two saloon cars and a baggage car .

After the line had served its purpose, it was immediately dismantled.

Coronation Station

At the end of the line, a train station was built on the southern side of Frankfurter Chaussee, which was called the Frankfurter Chaussee stop in the official timetable documents . The track system extended beyond the road and made it possible to park locomotives. The magnificent reception building consisted of two halls for the royal couple, additional halls for the family and entourage, a buffet room and toilet rooms. It was 9.5 meters wide and 12.50 meters long. The open reception hall, crowned by a huge golden eagle, was twelve meters high and the platform 38 meters long.

After October 22, 1861, the station building was sold and demolished shortly thereafter.
