The Orient-Institut Istanbul (OIIST) is a Turkish and regional scientific German research institute. It is one of the ten German institutes abroad of the direct federal Max Weber Foundation .

history

From 1989 to 2008 the OIIST worked as a branch of the Orient Institute in Beirut , which was founded in 1961 by the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft (DMG). In 2009 the OIIST became an independent research institute, independent of the parent company in Beirut.

Tasks and academic profile

The task of the OIIST is on the one hand the scientific exchange between Germany and Turkey. The OIIST operates historical and contemporary related research in the fields of Turkic , Ottoman , Central Asia Science , Islamic Studies and Iranian Studies ; Furthermore, regional research in the humanities and social sciences.

Library

The publicly accessible library comprises around 39,000 monographs and 1320 Ottoman, Turkish and other language journal titles. Approx. 140 current magazines are kept.
