The Gateway Bridge is in the center of the Gateway Motorway , which circles the eastern suburbs of Brisbane . It spans the Brisbane River near Moreton Bay .

construction

The Gateway Bridge is a girder bridge made of prestressed concrete . It was opened on January 11, 1986 after a construction period of six years. At that time it was the longest of its kind with a wingspan of 260 m and held this record for over 15 years. The bridge is 1630 m long in total. At 64.5 m, the Gateway Bridge is about as high as a 20-story high-rise. With a height of 15.2 m above the bridge piers and a width of 12 m on the underside, the box girder is still the largest prestressed concrete box girder of this type. At the top, the bridge girder is only 5.2 m high. Bruce Ramsey created the design concept for the bridge, the consulting engineering firm was Mc Donald, Wagner & Priddle. The bridge owes its shape to the special requirements of the other traffic routes, because air traffic allowed a maximum height of 80 m above sea level , while shipping below the bridge required a passage height of 55 m. 150,000 tonnes of concrete , 9,900 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 2,500 tonnes of prestressing steel were used for production in the open front . Due to time constraints, construction of the bridge began before the planning was fully completed.

use

The bridge has six lanes over a width of 21 m. It was funded by the Queensland state government. Therefore the use of the Gateway Bridge is chargeable. It is operated by Queensland Motorways, a state-owned company.

In early 2005 a major construction project was announced on the Gateway Motorway. This included the construction of a second bridge over the Brisbane River. The new bridge should be built downstream of the Gateway Bridge and be an exact copy of the existing bridge. This bridge was also financed through toll revenues . It was completed in May 2010. Both bridges carry together since then the name of Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges , named after Sir Leo Hielscher , a senior official in the Public Service of Australia.
