Bitterfeld mining area

The Bitterfeld mining district (part of the Central German mining district ) is a natural area in Saxony-Anhalt . The center of the area is the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen . Since it extends north of Delitzsch with a corner into the Saxon area, it is also included in the official natural area mapping to the natural areas in Saxony . The Leipziger Land connects to the south .

Important geological layers of the Bitterfeld mining area are deposits of the lignite-bearing Tertiary and tertiary and quaternary cover layers.

The original natural space was completely redesigned by man. Tilts, heaps and remaining holes shape the landscape. Lignite is still mined in some areas today . Most of the vegetation has been cleared from the landscape.
