The Gateway Motorway is an urban freeway in Brisbane in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . The Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges (formerly: Gateway Bridge ) are operated by Queensland Motorways .
The motorway runs around Brisbane in the east, creating a fast connection from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast . It begins on Logan Motorway (M2) in Drewvale in the south of the city and ends at the freeway triangle in Bald Hills in the north of the city, where it joins the Pacific Highway (NA1) and Gympie Arterial Road . At the interchange in Eight Mile Plains , its earlier end (until 1997), it meets the Pacific Motorway (M1) and the South East Freeway (M3) and changes its name from M2 to M1. The Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges over the Brisbane River at Eagle Farm are part of this highway. The road provides access to the port and airport of Brisbane.
expansion
Previously called the Gateway Motorway Gateway Arterial Road because it was not classified as a freeway and had three large roundabouts north of the Brisbane River. In 1987 the Queensland government upgraded the road to the freeway to handle the heavy traffic. In 1990 the bridges over East-West Arterial Road and the newly built Airport Drive in Hendra were built . Since 1991 the highway between Eight Mile Plains and Bracken Ridge has been expanded to four lanes. In early 1996, a further expansion stage was achieved with the establishment of four lanes between Bracken Ridge and Bald Hills .
In 1995, the construction of the southern connection to the Logan Motorway began, so that the Southern Brisbane Bypass was created. The street opened on May 13, 1997.
On February 17, 2005, the Minister of Transportation and Major Roads announced an AU $ 1.6 billion project to upgrade the Gateway Motorway, which would include a new Gateway Bridge alongside the old one, a road relocation between Eagle Farm and Nudgee, and improvements south of the Provided by the river. Work started in early 2007.
The new Gateway Bridge (both spines were renamed 'Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges') was opened in four-lane design on May 24, 2010. The two remaining lanes were put into operation on August 15, 2010. The adaptation of the old bridge to the new one was completed on November 28, 2010. To the north of the bridges, the motorway now runs further east and another feeder road, Moreton Drive , was created as an entrance to the airport's inland terminal. The new route opened on July 19, 2009 and Moreton Drive on December 3, 2009.
The street on the old route of the Gateway Motorway was renamed Southern Cross Way in November 2010 and the toll booths were replaced by electronic toll collectors.
South of the bridges, the highway was widened to 9 lanes to the Wynnum Road exit and 8 lanes to the Old Cleveland Road exit . From there it is six lanes to the confluence with Pacific Motorway. The expansion between Lyton Road and Mount Gravatt Capalaba Road was completed on January 28, 2010, and that between Mount Gravatt Capalaba Road and the Pacific Motorway on July 30, 2011.
In the first stage of expansion, the motorway did not have a number. Since March 1994 it has been called Metroroad 1 and since 2005 it has been called M1 , or M2 .
