The Gold Coast Highway is a trunk road in the extreme southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It connects the cities and towns along the Gold Coast and is connected to the Pacific Motorway (M1) in the north near Helensvale and the Pacific Highway (R1) in the south .

There are densely populated places with high development, such as Surfers Paradise , Main Beach and Broadbeach, and those with low development, such as Palm Beach and Bilinga . There are shopping malls in Southport , a historic hotel in Mermaid Beach , low-rise housing in Miami, and light industry in Arundel . Currumbin Creek and Burleigh Head National Park offer beautiful views of the coast.

history

This road used to be part of the Pacific Highway. At that time, goods traffic between Queensland and New South Wales ran along the Gold Coast. Today the Pacific Highway runs on the Pacific Motorway about 8 km west of the coastline.

Development status and speed limits

The Gold Coast Highway has four lanes for almost its entire length. Only at '' Labrador '' is a short two-lane piece and in some places there are six lanes (two of which are usually reserved for local public transport). Traffic accidents are mostly rear-end collisions at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings or are caused by excessive speed. The highway at Surfers Paradise is often congested at events, especially at the Indy Racing Carnival when it is reduced to 2 lanes.

The speed is usually limited to 70 km / h. The speed limit is 60 km / h in Palm Beach, Surfers Paradise and Labrador, 50 km / h in Burleigh Heads and 80 km / h north of Captain Cook Drive in Arundel.

Planned expansion

  • Labrador : Between Government Road and North Street along the section of the route that is mostly called Frank Street: The highway is to be widened from two to four lanes within several years. In 2007 a four-lane bridge over Loders Creek was completed and work has only just begun on Robert Street. The goal is a continuous four-lane road like in Surfers Paradise with a narrow median, bus lanes near the traffic lights.
  • Broadbeach to Miami : bus lanes, pedestrian crossings to bus stops, turning options, traffic lights, traffic signs, lighting and a median should be added. The first construction phase (Alexandra Avenue to Hilda Street) was completed in mid-September 2008. The second construction phase (Hilda Street to Chairlift Avenue) was mostly finished in July 2009. Some work still needs to be done.
  • Tugun : The worst bottleneck in Tugun, where the Gold Coast Highwayjoins the PacificHighway 8 km north of Coolangatta , was eliminated in June 2008 with the opening of the Tugun Bypass. Further improvements are planned at this point.

Local public transport

Since December 17, 2007, a bus has been running every five minutes between Southport and Burleigh Heads during the day and every half hour between Southport and Tweed Heads (NSW) around the clock. The bus routes are operated by Surfside Buslines for TransLink . In some places there are already dedicated bus lanes on the highway, which are to be expanded into a continuous route. The Gold Coast Rapid Trans System has been under construction since the beginning of 2011. More than half of all public transport routes on the Gold Coast run along the highway.
