Southport is a city on the coast of Queensland in Australia with a population of 31,908. The name comes from the fact that the city had the southernmost port of the Queensland colony. Administratively it is part of the city of Gold Coast , which was created in 1958 from the merger of several neighboring communities. Southport is the business district of Gold Coast, while the tourist centers that used to be concentrated here have largely migrated to other parts of the city.
Southport used to be a wood processing center. In 1898 the city received a rail link connecting Southport with Brisbane . The city's development was boosted by the construction of the Jubilee Bridge to Main Beach . Especially since the end of World War II, the city has become a popular vacation spot.
