Thomas Michael "Tommy" Oar (born December 10, 1991 in Southport ) is an Australian football player who also has Spanish citizenship .

Club career

The grandson of Basque grandparents started playing football at the local club Carrara at the age of four . He then played for many years in the youth teams of Palm Beach and was also used for the first time in the senior sector in 2006. In 2007 he received a scholarship at the Queensland Academy of Sport and then signed a three-year contract with the professional club Queensland Roar (since 2009 Brisbane Roar) in mid-2008 . With the signature he became the youngest player in the history of the Roar. Oar, who is considered one of the greatest talents in Australia, has his strengths thanks to his speed mainly in one-on-one and is therefore occasionally compared with his role model Harry Kewell .

Shortly after his 17th birthday, he made his professional debut in the A-League on December 14, 2008 against the Newcastle United Jets . Two weeks later, he converted a direct free kick against Wellington Phoenix in stoppage time, ensuring his team a 3-2 win. At the end of the season he moved with the club in the championship play-offs and failed there in the Preliminary Final at Adelaide United . In the 2009/10 season Roar missed the play-offs, Oar was nevertheless awarded as the best young player in the league at the end of the season. He prevailed in a vote against Kofi Danning , Leigh Broxham , Rostyn Griffiths , Ben Kantarovski and Mathew Leckie .

For the 2010/11 season, Oar and his Brisbane teammates Adam Sarota and Michael Zullo moved to the Dutch first division club FC Utrecht , where he signed a contract until July 1, 2015. The expiring contract in Utrecht was not renewed, so he left the club after five years in the summer of 2015. He found a new employer in Ipswich Town, England .

National team

At the age of 16, he took part in the U-19 Asian Championship with the Australian U-20 team in November 2008 and qualified with the team by reaching the semi-finals for the 2009 Junior World Championship in Egypt. At the World Cup in Egypt, Oar was in the starting line-up in all three preliminary round games, the Australian team did not win points against Costa Rica, the Czech Republic and Brazil and was eliminated.

After his good performance in the league, Oar made his international debut for the Australian senior team in the decisive Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia on March 3, 2010 and was the most prominent player of his team in the 1-0 win.
