Rostyn John Griffiths (born March 10, 1988 in Stoke-on-Trent , England ) is an Australian football player .

Club career

Griffiths was born in England and grew up in Perth, Western Australia , where he played for ECU Joondalup in his youth . In 2004, the Blackburn Rovers took the midfielder to their youth academy, in 2007 he moved up to the adult division of the English club, but did not get beyond missions for the reserve team. Therefore, he was awarded in January 2008 for the remainder of the season to the financially troubled Scottish first division club FC Gretna , who stopped playing after the season. After his return he was given on loan to the English fourth division club Accrington Stanley in September 2008 , for which he came to 13 league and two cup appearances in three months.

Accrington planned to sign Griffiths for January 2009, but the transfer failed during negotiations with Blackburn. Instead, he signed a one-month contract in early February with the option of a two-year extension in Australia with Adelaide United , who brought him into the team to replace the injured Jason Spagnuolo . The season there was already in the championship play-offs, Griffiths came to two missions in the course of the 0-1 final defeat against Melbourne Victory he was not called up.

Since Adelaide did not make use of the option to extend the contract, he continued his career with the newly formed Australian A-League team North Queensland Fury and scored the club's first goal in the A-League on the first day of the 2009/10 season . After one season and 23 league appearances for Fury, he moved to the 2010/11 season for league rivals Central Coast Mariners .

In February 2012 he left Australia and moved to Guangzhou R&F FC in China

He left the Chinese club in January 2014 and returned to Australia. There he played for one season with Perth Glory before moving to Europe to Roda Kerkrade .

His younger brother Brent also played for some time at the Academy of Blackburn Rovers and was later also active in the A-League.

National team

In 2005 Griffiths was part of the Australian squad in preparation for the U-17 World Cup, but missed the finals after breaking a leg in a preparatory game and has not been nominated by the Australian side since. After his performance for Accrington, the Welsh Federation became aware of the midfielder, for whom he would be eligible to play because of his Welsh grandfather. A final decision by Griffiths is pending (as of April 2010).
