Adam David Griffiths (born August 21, 1979 in Sydney ) is a former Australian football player .
Club career
Griffiths began his adult career with the Sutherland Sharks before playing in the National Soccer League (NSL) for Northern Spirit FC . Since he did not succeed at Northern, he moved to league rivals Newcastle United in 2002 , where he met his two brothers. In the 2002/03 season, they made it to the finals, but there it was only enough for last place. After the NSL was discontinued in 2004, Griffiths, like many Australian footballers, moved abroad.
With the Belgian first division promoted KV Oostende he missed relegation in the 2004/05 season and therefore accepted an offer from English second division club Watford in the summer of 2005 , which Griffiths offered a six-month contract as a trial period. Since Griffiths did not meet the expectations of those responsible and was not used, the option to extend the contract by 18 months was not drawn by the club. Two weeks later he signed a contract with third division AFC Bournemouth until the end of the season after convincing in a friendly. Griffiths came to seven league appearances for Bournemouth, which did not renew his contract at the end of the season. The defensive player then found a new club in league rivals FC Brentford , where he served as a regular player during the season, but had to relegate to Football League Two as a beaten bottom in the final table .
Griffiths then returned to Australia to Newcastle, who now played as Newcastle United Jets in the A-League created in 2005 , the successor to the 2004 National Soccer League. Under the leadership of twin brother Joel, who was named top scorer and best player of the season, the Jets surprisingly reached the championship final in the 2007/08 season . The defensive alliance around Adam Griffiths, Tarek Elrich , captain Jade North , Andrew Durante , Adam D'Apuzzo and Stuart Musialik , who conceded the fewest goals in the regular season , also stood up to the 1-0 final victory against the Central Coast Mariners .
Already during the 2008/09 season , which the club completed as the reigning champions at the bottom of the table, Griffiths signed a contract with the newly founded A-League rivals Gold Coast United . As a key defensive player for the team around the stars Jason Culina and Shane Smeltz , Griffiths only played on the opening match day for Gold Coast before he accepted a financially lucrative offer from the Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab and became the first Australian professional in Saudi Arabia . His stay there was not a success, after only a few appearances he was released from his contract at the end of 2009 and signed for the upcoming AFC Champions League 2010 with Adelaide United . Griffiths played four games in the Champions League for Adelaide and qualified with the team for the round of 16, in which they failed 3-2 after extra time to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors . After six months he left Adelaide and moved to China to Hangzhou Nabel Greentown . In 2012 he went to Sydney FC . Here he played for eleven months and continued his career with Selangor FA and Kedah FA in Malaysia . In 2015 he played for APIA Leichhardt FC in his home country and then ended his active career.
National team
Adam Griffiths was the last of the three brothers to make his international debut. Under coach Pim Verbeek , he played for the first time for the Australian national team in a friendly against Singapore in March 2008 . For his second and last international match, he came two months later in another friendly against Ghana.
