The midfielder is the son of well-known Australian soccer coach Branko Culina . He started his career at Sydney United before making his breakthrough after moving to local rivals Sydney Olympic . After 20 first division games, he dared the leap to the Netherlands to Ajax Amsterdam . In three attempts he was never able to prevail there. In between, however, there were also two very successful seasons in the first Belgian league with Germinal Beerschot Antwerp and in the Netherlands with De Graafschap , where he was loaned from Ajax. He had his most successful season so far in 2004/05 after moving to FC Twente , where he played almost every game as a regular and scored 11 goals. In early 2011 he moved to the Newcastle Jets league . He left the Jets after a year in early 2012. After a year without a club, Sydney FC signed Culina in October 2012 and provided him with a contract until the end of the season. He played his last game on January 26, 2013 in the 3-1 loss to Melbourne Victory . After this game he announced his retirement.
His league success was followed by his appointment to the Australian national football team on February 9, 2005 . He was part of the team that successfully qualified for the 2006 World Cup and was part of Australia's World Cup squad . He was also in the squad again in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . He played his last international match on April 14, 2011 against the South Korean national soccer team .
