The FC Twente is a Dutch football club . It was named after the Twente region , which is also where Enschede is located.

history

Emergence

The club was created on July 1, 1965 from the merger between the Enschede Sports Club and the Enschedese Boys . While the sports club played first-class, the Enschedese Boys were in the Eerste Divisie until then . However, there were ideas for a merger ten years earlier, for the inauguration of the Diekman Stadium . Although many parties opposed a merger of the two clubs, this was finally enforced. On February 11, 1965, the decision was made to use the name FC Twente'65 as the new club name.

On April 13, 1965, the two clubs were finally united. In the vote to found the new club, there were a total of 324 votes in favor and 215 against. This majority resulted in the approval of the establishment of FC Twente. For the season 1965/66, the club was entitled to play in the Eredivisie .

1965–1980: Established in the Eredivisie

The first few years after the merger were not easy. There were still opponents who worked against the unification of the two clubs. The merger made it possible to reduce the mountain of debt that had accumulated until then. However, there were still financial problems and it was difficult to motivate the squad. The first coach was the Austrian Friedrich Donenfeld . After only one year and eleventh place in the league, this was replaced by Kees Rijvers . This renewed the squad and increasingly built on the youth. Rijvers brought players such as Epi Drost , Theo Pahlplatz , Jan Jeuring , Dick van Dijk , Eddy Achterberg , Kick van der Vall , Piet Schrijvers , Kees van Ierssel , René and Willy van de Kerkhof , who became important top performers for the team in the following seasons Partly shaped the image of the team over the years. Year after year the aim was to sell good players at high prices and to attract young talent to Enschede with little financial outlay. In 1968/69 they made it into the top 3 of the league for the first time in the club's history.

In the following ten years, the club established itself at the top of the table. Not only on the square, but also in the surrounding area, there was an improvement, which could be recognized by the increasing number of visitors. In 1972/73 Enschede played in the UEFA Cup for the first time after finishing third the previous year. After a first leg defeat, the club prevailed in the first round of the competition in the second leg against Dinamo Tbilisi and advanced to the next round. The team made it to the semi-finals via Frem Copenhagen , UD Las Palmas and OFK Belgrade . There Twente had to admit defeat 0: 3 and 1: 2 against Borussia Mönchengladbach . In 1975 the two clubs met again in the UEFA Cup finals. On the way there, the team of Spitz Kohn eliminated Ipswich Town , RWD Molenbeek , Dukla Prague , Velež Mostar and Juventus Turin . In the first leg of the final at the Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf , the favorites from Mönchengladbach were 0-0. However, Twente lost the second leg at home with 1: 5. In the league they came third again. Throughout the season, goalkeeper Piet Schrijvers conceded only 13 goals, setting the club's record. This made the Twente defense the best defense in the league. The year before, they were the team with the fewest goals. In the meantime, it was players like Frans Thijssen , Johan Zuidema , Jaap Bos , Arnold Mühren , Niels Overweg , Ab Gritter and a little later Hallvar Thoresen , Piet Wildschut and André van Gerven who led the club to such successes in the 1970s. In the summer of 1977 the first title was finally won. In the KNVB Cup they beat PEC Zwolle 3-0 and celebrated their first national triumph in the club's history. On the way to the final, the Twenter players AZ Alkmaar'67 , NAC Breda , Feyenoord and the Go Ahead Eagles eliminated. The then second division team from Zwolle made it difficult for the Enschedern for a long time and forced them into extra time. There Epi Drost shot the opening goal in the 96th minute and the Zwoll defensive bulwark was defeated. A penalty by Arnold Mühren and another goal by substitute Jan Jeuring made the class difference clear.

As a cup winner, the team was thus qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup 1977/78 . The team reached the semi-finals undefeated and with only one goal conceded, but had to admit defeat to the Belgian representative RSC Anderlecht . The following year Twente played again in the UEFA Cup. In the first round, the team was eliminated by Manchester City . 1978/79 the national cup final was reached again, which was lost to Ajax Amsterdam . Since Ajax were also Dutch champions, they played again in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1979/80 . But as in the previous year, it was over after the first round.

1980–1985: national mediocrity, relegation and return

Logo between 1995 and 2006

1980/81 you took part in the UEFA Cup for the last time until 1989. The disappointment was great after they only played 0-0 at Dynamo Dresden in the second round after a 1-1 home draw and were eliminated. In 1981/82 the national slump came and the team was only in twelfth place, the following season even only in 16th place. With a goal difference of 36:60, they had one of the worst of all the first division teams. Only NEC Nijmegen scored fewer goals this season (34 hits). The consequence of this was the descent from the Eredivisie. Important players at that time were Hallvar Thoresen , Heini Otto , Martin Jol and Romeo Zondervan , but all of them left the club after relegation. In order to save the club from going into the second division, the successful coach Spitz Kohn was hired as an interim coach and assistant coach Epi Drost was reactivated as a player. The German Fritz Korbach should then bring the team back into the first division as a coach. So he took over the Ensched club in the summer of 1983/84. He built a team of young players like Rob Reekers , who later also played in Germany and became a coach, and experienced players like Rinie Plasman , Jan Sörensen and Martien Vreijsen , who gave the club a new structure. With the Englishman Billy Ashcroft the coach signed the new top scorer of the club. Korbach found the right mix and managed to get back up straight away. In the year of his return to the honor division, he placed the team there in eighth place and thus achieved a corresponding success.

1985–1997: Re-establishment as a top team

Before the start of the 1986/87 season, Twente parted ways with Korbach because the past season did not go as planned. In 1985/86 Twenters only achieved 14th place. Overall, the team only won eight games and lost 15. The 8-1 home and 6-0 away defeats against Ajax Amsterdam were particularly bitter . The German coach then went to league rivals SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden . He was succeeded by Theo Vonk from the Netherlands , who from then on occupied the position of coach. He immediately improved his team performance and came seventh in his debut year for Enschede. In the years that followed, the team improved continuously and established itself among the best teams in the country until 1995.

In 1988/89 the club qualified for the UEFA Cup for the first time in a long time. The euphoria only lasted for a short time after the team failed in round one against Club Bruges . The following year’s UEFA Cup season came to an end after two first-round matches and the team lost to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Although there was still no international success, the team re-established itself among the top clubs in the league. Between 1988 and 1997, Twente made it into the top six teams in the league in nine out of ten seasons. Mostly you had to let the teams from Feyenoord Rotterdam , Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven go first and the club was left behind.

After repeated long periods of absence in international business, the team scored 65 points in the second year of the three-point rule (1996/97) and thus secured third place behind Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven. This qualified the team for the 1997/98 UEFA Cup competition

The most important players in the ten years between 1985 and 1995 include the Dutch Sander Boschker , Jan van Halst , Nico-Jan Hoogma , Pieter Huistra , André Karnebeek , Hans de Koning , Michael Mols , Youri Mulder , Fred Rutten , Clemens Zwijnenberg and der Finn Mika Lipponen .

1998–2006: Gray average, second cup success

Club logo since 2006

At the end of the 1990s, the team slipped more and more into the middle of the table. Before that, the team took part again in 1997/98 in the UEFA Cup, where they prevailed in round one against the Norwegian club Lillestrøm SK and in the second round against the Danish representative Aarhus GF . In round three it ended with 0: 1 and 0: 2 against France's AJ Auxerre . After being in the league for 14 years constantly among the top ten teams in the Eredivisie, the team found itself in eleven position after the end of the season in 2000/01. In the same year, however, achieved the second cup success in the club's history. In the final PSV Eindhoven was beaten on penalties. Dennis Hulshoff converted the decisive penalty after PSV failed to score three times in a row. After the regular playing time and extra time, it was 0-0 between the two teams. The coach at the time was Fred Rutten , who left the club at the end of the season.

In the game for the Johan Cruyff Cup , the Dutch Supercup, they were beaten 2: 3 by PSV Eindhoven. In the first important game of Belgian new coach René Vandereycken , PSV took the lead early on through Mateja Kežman and Arnold Bruggink , before De Witte scored the next goal in the first half. But Dennis Rommedahl ensured the two-goal lead in the 71st minute. Shortly before the end of the game, Van der Doele shortened again for Twente, but the defeat could not be averted. In the following year, it deteriorated to twelfth place. This was the worst position since 1985/86 when Twente finished 14th. In 2004 the team was again in the final of the KNVB Cup, but this time lost. On the way to the final, the club beat opponents like Feyenoord Rotterdam and NAC Breda . In the final on May 23, 2004, however, they lost the game against FC Utrecht after FCU player Dave van den Bergh scored the goal of the day.

2007–2019: championship, financial problems, relegation and promotion

For the 2006/07 season, Fred Rutten took over the reins of the Ensched football club. With him success came back. He led the team straight away to fourth place and the following year to second place. On May 18, 2008, FC Twente qualified for the UEFA Champions League with a success in the Eredivisie Playoffs against Ajax Amsterdam . The team surprisingly prevailed against Ajax with a 2-1 first leg in Emmen and a 0-0 second leg in the Amsterdam Arena , but failed in round three of the Champions League qualification at Arsenal FC from London . In June 2008, the former English national coach Steve McClaren was hired as the new coach of FC Twente. Rutten was poached by FC Schalke 04 this summer , so that he was drawn to the German Bundesliga. A first exclamation point McClaren was the qualification for the UEFA Cup round of 32 after a 2-1 win against friends FC Schalke 04 on December 3, 2008. There they were unlucky after 1-0 and 0-1 on penalties against Olympique Marseille out. In the league, McClaren repeated last year's success and finished second behind AZ Alkmaar . In addition, the team moved into the final of the KNVB Cup. There they lost to SC Heerenveen on penalties . In the summer break before the 2009/10 season, young star Marko Arnautović was awarded to Inter Milan . The Australian Nikita Rukavytsya , the South African Bernard Parker and the Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz were signed as successors for the storm . Ruiz in particular should hit the mark in the period that followed. The first half of the 2009/10 season went very well. In addition to 15 wins, there were only two draws against the direct competition (Feyenoord Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven) and Twente were undefeated leaders in the first half of the series. In the newly introduced UEFA Europa League , McClaren's team prevailed in the group stage and qualified for the knockout round, but where it ended up against SV Werder - in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup final. In the second half of the season there was no more nakedness in the league, but had to wait until the last day of the game, as pursuit Ajax Amsterdam stubbornly kept up. With a 2-0 win over NAC Breda , Twente finally secured the championship on the last day of the 2009/10 season and with 86 points remained one point better than Ajax. The best attacker of the season was Bryan Ruiz, who had signed the previous summer, with 24 goals for his team.

After the championship, coach McClaren announced his departure from Enschede and signed a contract with German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg . After the end of the 2009/10 season, the Englishman was also awarded the Rinus Michels Prize , an honor for the best coach of the year, for his performance . He was the first foreigner to receive this title. Leaving McClaren meant a change for the club after the first championship. In addition to him, the Swiss Blaise Nkufo and the Dane Kenneth Perez left the club, who were important pillars of the team in the championship season. Nkufo scored a total of 114 goals for the club between 2003 and 2010, holding the club's record. Marko Arnautović, who was to return from Milan, was sold to SV Werder. McClaren's successor was the Belgian Michel Preud'homme . In addition, Twente veteran Jeroen Heubach ended his career, but will stay with the club as an assistant. To equip for the storm, Marc Janko from the Austrian first division club FC Red Bull Salzburg , the Belgian Nacer Chadli and the Swede Emir Bajrami from IF Elfsborg were signed . With Rasmus Bengtsson , Roberto Rosales and Bart Buysse , three new players have been signed for the defense.

Before the start of the league, Twente played together with Ajax Amsterdam for the Johan Cruyff Cup , the Dutch Supercup. An early goal by Luuk de Jong decided the game in Twente's favor. Thus new coach Preud'homme had a good start into the new season.

The defending champion started the new season with two draws. The Enscheder team remained undefeated until the eleventh match day. On matchday 12 there was a clash between Twente and the leading PSV Eindhoven , who had also not yet lost a game. With a goal from Nacer Chadli , the team decided the game 1-0 in their favor and Twente moved back to first place in the Eredivisie for the first time in the new season. The first defeat came two game days later against NAC Breda when Twente lost 2-1 away.

The Dutch champions started the first Champions League season on September 14, 2010 with a 2-2 home draw against Inter Milan , who won the Champions League in the previous season. Theo Janssen was the first Champions League goalscorer in club history with a direct free kick. The first win in the competition came on November 2nd in the away game against Werder Bremen . In the 2-0 win, Nacer Chadli met ten minutes before the end of the game, followed by Luuk de Jong for the Dutch. With a total of one win and three draws, Twente achieved third place in the preliminary round at the Champions League premiere. Thus, the club was eliminated from the competition, but secured entry into the UEFA Europa League , in which they failed in the quarter-finals at Villarreal from Spain.

In the 2011/12 season, Twente Enschede reached sixth place in the Eredivisie . In the KNVB Cup , the defending champion was eliminated in the round of 16 against eventual cup winners PSV Eindhoven with 1: 2 nV. With the elimination in the Champions League qualification against Benfica Lisbon (2: 2 in the first leg, 1: 3 in the second leg), Twente started in the UEFA Europa League in Group K, the winners of which Twente emerged. Twente lost to FC Schalke 04 in the round of 16 (1-0 in the first leg, 1: 4 in the second leg).

For the 2012/13 season, Twente secured a place in the UEFA Europa League qualification through the fair play rating . Only with a 4: 1 after extra time could they prevail in the second leg of the play-offs against Bursaspor and thus qualify for the group phase of this competition. There they were eliminated in a group with Hannover 96 , UD Levante and Helsingborgs IF as the bottom of the group.

On December 16, 2015, the Dutch association KNVB banned the club from the European Cup for three years . The reason for this is the transfer of the transfer rights from seven Twente players to the Doyen Sports Group from Malta, which invested five million euros in 2014 . Since May 2015 this has violated the regulations of the KNVB. In November 2015 it became known that the investor group was exerting influence on the management of Twente in addition to the transfer rights. The association then banned the board members of FC Twente for all football activities and the KNVB license commission imposed a fine of 42,500 euros. The continuation of the license depended on the continued cooperation of the financially troubled association with the KVNB.

Due to financial mismanagement, the Dutch football association KNVB ordered Twente to be relegated to the second-class Eerste Divisie on May 17, 2016 . A month later, however, the decision was withdrawn by the Appeals Committee of the KNVB, so that the club was allowed to remain in the Eredivisie. However, he was fined 180,000 euros.

After 34 years, Enschede was relegated from the Eredivisie in summer 2018. On April 22, 2019, the direct return to the Eredivisie was celebrated early (2 game days before the end of the season). It was enough in the home game against Jong AZ a 0-0, as the pursuers Sparta Rotterdam lost 2-0 at Jong PSV.

Stadion

The stadium, built in 1998 west of the city on the railway line to Hengelo , was named after a tour operator. As a sponsor, this company had borne part of the construction costs of the stadium. After the expansion from 13,500 to around 24,000 seats in summer 2008, the stadium was renamed and the Grolsch brewery is now the namesake of De Grolsch Veste . The stadium was inaugurated on May 10, 1998 during the league season with a 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven . There are currently plans to expand the arena's capacity to over 44,000 seats. Until 1998, the club played its games in the Diekman Stadium .

On July 7, 2011, part of the roof of the De Grolsch Veste stadium collapsed during construction work . There were two dead and 14 injured. The cause of the crash was a lack of risk assessment during the construction work.

Rutten has a total of four years of service, Kohn eight. Another record holder in a continuous coaching period is Spitz Kohn , who was under contract in Enschede for seven years between 1972 and 1979. The most successful coach is the Englishman Steve McClaren . Since taking office in the summer of 2008, he has led the team to a runner-up title and to reaching the finals in the KNVB Cup . In the following year he brought the team to the first championship in the club's history.

Twentieth President

The chairmen of FC Twente have always been Dutch. The first president was Cor Hilbrink . Because of his many years of service to the club, a grandstand in the De Grolsch Veste stadium was named after him in 2009 . Hilbrink was previously president of the Quick '20 club . When Sportclub Enschede and Enschede Boys merged , he was invited in his role as Quick Chairman to find a president for the new club who had previously worked neither for the sports club nor for the boys. Hilbrink remained in this office until his death on June 11, 1973. When he was eight years old, he also holds the club record. The last president was Joop Munsterman . He was previously on the board of the club. He was able to save the club from bankruptcy. In addition, the introduction of a women's football department and the club's first championship win fell during his time.

Women's team

The club has had a women's soccer team since the 2007/08 season . This is entitled to take part in the Eredivisie for women under the name FC Twente Enschede . Mary Cook-Willemsen became the first trainer . This led her team to win the KNVB Cup in the first year . On August 29, 2007, the women of FC Twente opened the women's league in front of a home crowd in De Grolsch Veste .

Youth teams

In addition to the first team, FC Twente has its own football academy. In addition to the professional sector, this represents an important branch of the association. Some examples of recent talents are Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink , Niels Oude Kamphuis , Karim El Ahmadi , Peter Niemeyer , Ramon Zomer and Wout Brama . But players like Sander Boschker , Jeroen Heubach , Fred Rutten and Theo Snelders were also trained in Enschede.

In 2002 the Voetbalacademie FC Twente (until 2009: Voetbalacademie FC Twente / Heracles Almelo) was founded. This created a cooperation between Heracles Almelo and Go Ahead Eagles Deventer (from 2009) in order to benefit together from good youth work. But Twente takes the lead here.
