Paul Bosvelt (born March 26, 1970 in Doetinchem ) is a former Dutch football player .

Career

society

Bosvelt began his career in 1989 with Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer . Right away he made the leap into the team. In his first year as a professional, he made 32 league appearances. In 1992 he rose with the club from the Eerste Divisie to the Eredivisie and asserted himself there. 1993/94 Bosvelt played a strong season. In 32 games he scored nine goals and brought his team to twelfth place, the best position since 1986. His performance did not go unnoticed by other teams. For the 1994/95 season he moved to league competitor Twente Enschede . There he immediately advanced to become a regular player and developed further. After only three years, the midfielder moved to the top Dutch club Feyenoord Rotterdam , with whom he experienced a heyday: in 1999 the club became champions of the Eredivisie and winners of the Johan Cruyff Schaal . In 2002, as captain of the team, he led the team to victory in the UEFA Cup . In the final on May 8, 2002 against Borussia Dortmund , Rotterdam won 3-2 with goals from Pierre van Hooijdonk (2) and Jon Dahl Tomasson . Shortly afterwards, on August 30th, the team even had the opportunity to win the UEFA Super Cup , but were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid . In 2003, Bosvelt moved to Manchester City in England . From the 2005/06 season he played at SC Heerenveen , where he ended his professional career after the playoff games in May 2007.

National team

For the Dutch national team , he played 24 games from 2000 to 2004. At the Euro 2000 in his own country and at the European Championships in 2004 he was part of the Orjanes squad. In the semifinals of the European Championship in 2000 he became a tragic figure when he could not convert the last and decisive penalty against Francesco Toldo in the penalty shoot-out against Italy. He came to a total of four tournament appearances. For the 2002 World Cup, the team failed to qualify.
