He moved to SC Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie in 1994 at the age of 17 , for whom he scored 37 goals in three seasons. In 1997 he moved to the English Premier League for Newcastle United . In his first season in England he scored three goals in 23 games; his contract was not renewed. After a year he returned to the Eredivisie at Feyenoord Rotterdam , became Dutch champions in 1998 and won the UEFA Cup. In the final of the 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund , he scored the 3-1.

AC Milan

In 2002 AC Milan brought the Dane to their home on a free transfer. Two other world-class strikers played there in his first year and he was not used often. In his second season he got more playing time due to the injury of Filippo Inzaghi and scored numerous goals.

VfB Stuttgart / FC Villarreal

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season Tomasson played in the German Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart . He signed a four-year contract. There he could not convince, however, and was loaned to Villarreal during the winter break for the rest of the 2006/07 season. From July 1, 2007 he was part of the second team at VfB Stuttgart. On July 10, 2007, he finally moved to Villarreal.

Return to the Netherlands

In summer 2008 Tomasson returned to the Netherlands. He signed with Feyenoord, where he had played from 1998 to 2002, a contract to 2011. At the end of the 2010/11 season he finished because of an injury he at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa had contracted his active career.

National team

On March 29, 1997 Tomasson made his debut for the Danish national team in a qualifying game for the 1998 World Cup against Croatia (1: 1) ; he came on in the 70th minute for Per Frandsen . The qualifying game in Bosnia-Herzegovina on August 20, 1997 was Tomasson's last international game for the time being. In the last two qualifying games, against Croatia and Greece , Tomasson sat on the bench before he was no longer nominated for a while. He was also not nominated for the 1998 World Cup finals.

On August 19, 1998, almost a year after his last international match, he made his comeback in the national team. Tomasson was in the starting eleven in the 1-0 defeat against the Czech Republic and was replaced by Niclas Jensen after 68 minutes . After this game he made the breakthrough in the Danish selection. In qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2000 , he was part of the game and qualified for the European Championship finals in the play-offs against Israel . In the group stage they lost all three group games and were eliminated after the preliminary round.

Tomasson contributed to qualifying for the 2002 World Cup with three goals. In the World Cup final group, the Danes prevailed first in Group A, Tomasson scored four goals. The Danes were eliminated in the round of 16 against England (0: 3).

In the finals, Denmark reached the quarter-finals and lost 3-0 to the Czech Republic. In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , Tomasson scored five goals, but the team did not qualify as third party.

In Group F of qualifying for the European Football Championship 2008 Tomasson met five times; Denmark occupied fifth place in the table. In the European Championship qualifier on June 2, 2007 against Sweden (3: 3) Tomasson scored the 2: 3. The game was stopped shortly before the end due to an attack by a spectator on the referee and later scored 3-0 for Sweden.

On August 20, 2008 Tomasson played his 100th international match. Qualifying for the 2010 World Cup was more successful than the last two qualifying rounds , in which Denmark prevailed with two points ahead of Portugal and Sweden. However, Tomasson didn't score in qualifying. At the World Cup, Denmark played against the Netherlands, Cameroon and Japan in the group stage . Despite a goal from Tomasson - his first goal in two years - the Danes lost 3-1 in the decisive group game against Japan and were eliminated from the tournament. That game was Tomasson's 112th and final international match. In August 2010 he resigned from the national team, whose team captain he had been. With his goal against Japan, he was level with Poul Nielsen in the scorers list of the Danish national team (both 52 goals).
