Kasper Peter Schmeichel (born November 5, 1986 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish football player . The goalkeeper is under contract with Leicester City in the English Premier League .

Life

Schmeichel was born to the Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel . He spent most of his childhood in Manchester because of his father's professional career . He attended Hulme Hall School in Cheadle , Greater Manchester . From 1999 to 2001, Schmeichel was also at the Saint Julian's School in Lisbon when his father was playing for Sporting . Alex Bruce, son of his father's former colleague, Steve Bruce, is considered his best friend from childhood and adolescence .

In his youth he played for Estoril Praia in Portugal in the 2000/01 season . In the summer of 2002, the coach of Brøndby IF , Lars Olsen , became aware of the then 15-year-old at a leisure game of the Danish European Championship winners from 1992 and invited him to a youth tournament in Brøndby . Schmeichel then signed a long-term contract with his father's club, Manchester United's city rivals Manchester City , in September 2002 , which also includes educational and professional conditions.

Schmeichel was awarded in January 2006 to Darlington FC in the Football League Two . He made his debut on January 14, 2006 in a 2-1 win over Peterborough United . After three more games, he moved back to the Citizens .

Then the goalkeeper was awarded again at the end of February, this time to FC Bury . In three months, Schmeichel completed 15 games before returning to Manchester after avoiding relegation . For the new season , Kasper Schmeichel signed a three-month loan agreement at Gigg Lane in August 2006 . After 14 games, the goalkeeper's contract expired and returned to Manchester City.

In January 2007 Schmeichel was awarded to Scotland for first division club FC Falkirk until the end of the season.

He already played in several preparation games and made his debut on August 11, 2007 against West Ham United with a clean slate in a 2-0 win. On August 19, 2007, the goalkeeper won the derby against Manchester United 1-0 in front of his father, former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel . Then he had to give way to the then regular number 1 Andreas Isaksson and Joe Hart became the new number 2. That's why he was awarded twice this season, first to Cardiff City and later to Coventry City .

For the 2008/09 season Schmeichel returned to Manchester City. He was used once in the Premier League this season. On December 12, 2008, Schmeichel made his European debut when he played in the UEFA Cup group match against Racing Santander .

Notts County

In August 2009, Schmeichel signed a five-year contract with English fourth division club Notts County , reuniting with his former Manchester coach, Sven-Göran Eriksson , who was previously appointed Director of Sports for Notts County. With a salary of 1 million a year, he became the top earner there. The goalkeeper made his debut on August 22, 2009 in a 3-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge .

Schmeichel was named “Player of the Month” in October 2009 because of his good performance. After a 5-0 win against Darlington FC , the Magpies rose to first place in the third-rate Football League One . During this season he conceded only 29 goals in 43 games, while he even remained without a goal in 24 games. Towards the end of the season, the club announced that Schmeichel would leave the club on a free transfer due to his high salary of £ 15,000 a week, despite another four years of contract.

Leeds United

In May 2010, Kasper Schmeichel signed a two-year contract with English second division club Leeds United , which came into force on July 1, 2010. After it was initially unclear who would be the regular goalkeeper in the 2010/11 season, Schmeichel was eventually given preference over Shane Higgs .

On August 7, 2010, the then 23-year-old made his debut for his new club in the 2-1 defeat by Derby County in the Football League Championship 2010/11 . Shortly afterwards, Schmeichel was out for almost two months after a tendon injury in his foot. He made his comeback against Cardiff City . Due to the birth of his first child, he missed the game against Coventry City on November 6, 2010.

In June 2011, Leeds United accepted an offer from league rivals Leicester City . The transfer from Leicester City was confirmed on June 27, 2011, and Schmeichel has now been coached by Sven-Göran Eriksson for the third time .

On August 20, 2011, Schmeichel received the yellow-red card in the 79th minute of the away game against Nottingham Forest . On his Twitter page he apologized for his behavior with the words “I didn't know I had been booked as I had my back to the ref otherwise I would never have done that” (“I didn't know that I had been warned was because my back was turned to the referee. Otherwise I would never have done that ”). Nevertheless, the goalkeeper was the great support of his team; for example, his parade from very close range in the game against Portsmouth FC on November 26th, 2011 by Portsmouth FC coach Michael Appleton , was called "one of the best saves I have seen in a very long time" ("one of the best saves, I have seen for a long time ”).

In his first 2011/12 season, Schmeichel remained clean in 17 of 52 games and saved four penalties. He was named Leicester City's Player of the Season on April 30, 2012 .

In the first half of the 2012/13 season he remained clean in twelve of 28 games. Schmeichel played his 100th competitive game for Leicester City on April 16, 2013 in a 3-2 win over Bolton Wanderers . That season, his performances earned him the Championship PFA Team of the Year . In the 2013/14 season , Schmeichel rose with Leicester City as champions in the Premier League.

In the 2015/16 season , Schmeichel won the English championship with Leicester City. His contract runs until 2021.

National team

During his time at Manchester City , Schmeichel was appointed to Denmark's U-19 national team in August 2004 . He made his debut on September 2, 2004 in a 0-0 draw against Northern Ireland , and played a total of eight games. In October 2005 Schmeichel was nominated for the first time for the U-20 national team, but did not come to his first and only game in the U-20 team until October 5, 2006. The day after his debut he was nominated for Denmark's U-21 national team due to Theis Rasmussen's injury-related absence .

Schmeichel was named Denmark's U-21 Talent of the Year in November 2007 , after which he went straight to four games for the U-21s. Between March 2007 and October 2008 he came to play in 17 games and kept seven times the "clean slate".

Schmeichel made it clear that he would only play for the Danish and not for the English national team. At the end of May 2012 he was nominated by national coach Morten Olsen for the squad of the national team for the European Football Championship 2012 after goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen had to pass due to an injury. He played his first international match for Denmark on February 6, 2013 in a friendly against Macedonia .

With the national team, Schmeichel took part in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and reached the round of 16 . Here the team met Croatia . Schmeichel held a penalty from Luka Modrić at the end of extra time and thus saved his team in the penalty shoot-out , which they lost 4-3. He was voted "Man of the Match".
