The Darlington FC (officially: Darlington Football Club ) was an English football -Club from Darlington , England . The club's nickname was The Quakers (the Quakers ), referring to the great influence the religious movement had on the city.
history
The club was founded in 1883 and played in the Northern League in 1889, which they won in 1896 and 1900. In 1908 the club became a professional club and from then on played in the North Eastern League.
By 1925, they were promoted to the second highest English league, but two years later the club had to return to the lower classes.
In 1989, the team rose to the English Football Conference and thus from paid football, but the following year they were promoted directly and a year later even moved up to the third division. From 2010 until its dissolution in 2012, Darlington FC played in the fifth-rate Conference National .
present
The club played its home games at The Northern Echo Darlington Arena , a 25,000-seat football arena that opened in 2003 and was named after a local newspaper and formerly known as the Reynolds Arena . Previously, Darlington played at Feethams , the old stadium in the center of town.
The ambitious plan of the former President George Reynolds was to create Premier League conditions by building a football arena, which is quite unusual for the fourth division , and ultimately to lead the club into the first division. However, this goal was missed by far due to the poor purchasing policy in the players' area. Darlington FC is the trainer of many later Premier League players like Kasper Schmeichel.
