Nampalys Mendy (born June 23, 1992 in La Seyne-sur-Mer ) is a French football player whose parents come from Senegal . He is the cousin of Bafétimbi Gomis and was also born in the same town. Because of his stature and style of play, coaches and journalists have compared him to the former French star player Claude Makélélé at least since his time in Monaco .
Club career
AS Monaco
During his youth, Nampalys Mendy played for various clubs in Toulon , the neighboring town of his birthplace La Seyne-sur-Mer. In the youth of Sporting Toulon he was in 2007 by Didier Christophe , a former French national team and at this time for AS Monaco tätigem scout discovered and committed to their youth team.
After initially working for the youth teams and the reserve of the Monegasque, the young Mendy signed his first professional contract in April 2010. Under coach Guy Lacombe , the defensive midfielder regularly had a place in the starting line-up. On the first day of the 2010/11 season he made his debut in a 0-0 draw against Olympique Lyon over the full 90 minutes. But Monaco did not play successfully and changed coach in January 2011. Under the new head coach Laurent Banide , Nampalys Mendy only came to two more assignments until the end of the season. The Monegasque could no longer prevent relegation and therefore had to go to Ligue 2 . In September 2011, Banide had to leave Monaco after six game days without a win since the start of the season and was replaced by the new coach and former striker Marco Simone . Both under Banide and under the Italian Simone, Mendy got his regular place back in the 2011/12 season and was used in 28 league games.
The meanwhile new club president Dmitri Rybolowlew introduced Claudio Ranieri as the new coach for the 2012/13 season . Ranieri also bet on the young Frenchman and let him appear in the league 32 times. At the end of the season, Monaco rose to Ligue 1 as champions of Ligue 2 after a two-year absence. In May 2013, Mendy announced to his club that he would not renew his contract in Monaco and that he would leave the club at the end of the season.
OGC Nice
The transfer had already been indicated in the months before. Despite all inquiries from top European clubs, Mendy decided on league rivals OGC Nice from Monaco's neighboring city.
National team
Nampalys Mendy played for almost all of the French youth national teams. For example, he was part of the French squad at the U-17 European Football Championship in Germany in 2009 . There, however, his country was eliminated in the preliminary round and Mendy was only used in the first group game against Switzerland (1: 1). For the U-19 national team, he was used in October 2010 during the first qualifying round for the U-19 European Football Championship 2011 in all three successful group matches over the full distance. Nothing changed in the second qualifying round in May 2011. The French lost their second group game against the representation from Greece and thus did not qualify for the final tournament. For Mendy it was the last missions in the U-19. At the 2013 Toulon tournament , he reached third place with the U-20 national team and was used in all French games. For the U-21 team , the midfielder played one game each in 2010 and 2011. In his first U-21 game against Russia on November 16, 2010, he was the youngest player in the entire squad at the age of 18.
