Coupe Gambardella
Coupe Gambardella is the name of the French football cup for youth club teams (U-19 or A-youth). The competition was named after Emmanuel Gambardella , President of the Fédération Française de Football (FFF) from 1949 to 1953; the FFF is also the organizer of this competition. Until 1954 the Coupe Gambardella was called Coupe Nationale des Juniors . The main sponsor is the Crédit Agricole bank .
In France, the competition is an important stage on which clubs and their young players demonstrate the quality of their training centers (centers de formation), which are compulsory for professional clubs . Its particular attractiveness is that lower-class clubs can present their youth work to a wider public. Accordingly, the victorious clubs often mention this youth title under their palmarès .
Competition mode
The Coupe Gambardella will be held according to the cup mode , i.e. in the knockout system ; The eliminations usually begin in December of each year at the regional level. From the round of the last 128 teams, the matches and home rights are drawn nationwide. Only the winner of the game will advance to the next round; If a game is tied after 90 minutes, there is no overtime , instead there is an immediate penalty shoot-out to determine the winner.
In the semi-finals, the games will be played on a neutral pitch, one after the other in the same stadium. The final takes place as a prelude to the men's cup final at the Stade de France . It has happened more often than not that both the youths and the men teams from the same club had reached the final; that both teams then also won the respective cup has only happened three times, namely in 1970 (AS Saint-Étienne), 2007 (FC Sochaux) and 2013 (Girondins Bordeaux).
