Grandmaster coat of arms of Joubert

Joubert of Syria (also Iubertus, Jobert, Gilbert, Josberto ; † October 1177 ) was the seventh Grand Master of the Order of St. John from 1169 until his death .

He followed Gastone de Murols after his death. His nickname goes back to the fact that he was born in Palestine ( Syria ).

When King Amalrich I of Jerusalem made a trip to Constantinople in 1172 to win the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I for an alliance against Saladin, he appointed Joubert as regent of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and as guardian of the minor heir to the throne for the time of his absence Baldwin IV a.

In August 1174 he opposed, together with the Templars and local nobles, the self-appointed regent of Jerusalem , Miles von Plancy , who ruled for the young and leprous King Baldwin IV. Joubert refused to support his attack with a Norman-Sicilian fleet on Egypt . He took the side of Count Raimund III. of Tripoli , who succeeded Miles as regent after Miles was murdered in the autumn of the same year. In December 1174 the knights of the order then took part in Raimund's attack on Sultan Saladin in Syria , where the latter had just taken Homs . In 1176 he joined Count Philip of Flanders to fight Saladin in Syria. Joubert supported the policy of King Baldwin IV, who wanted to expand into Egypt. The king promised the order a piece of land (still to be conquered) in Egypt for their support.

Joubert was mentioned for the last time in January 1177 and probably died in the same year. His successor Roger de Moulins gave up the expansion plans to Egypt.
