Johann Ludwig Gottfried (* 1584 in Amberg (Upper Palatinate); † May 1633 ) was a theologian , translator , author , editor and proofreader .

Life

For a long time Gottfried's name was viewed as a pseudonym of Johann Philipp Abelin and its existence was negated.

From 1601 Johann Ludwig Gottfried studied theology in Heidelberg . From 1603 to 1624 at the latest he was first as a deacon , then as a reformed pastor in 4 parishes in the Electoral Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine (Gau-Odernheim, Eimsheim, Monzernheim, Weinolsheim).

Through a Latin retelling of Ovid's Metamorphoses, he came into contact with the de Bry publishing house in Oppenheim in 1619 and from then on worked with his versatile language skills and his education as a valued employee of Oppenheim and Frankfurt publishers such as Johann Theodor de Bry , de Bry's nephews Lucas Jennis and de Bry's son-in-law, Matthäus Merian the Elder. He provided translations, epigrams , paraphrases and compilations for many large publications by these publishers. He oversaw some publishing projects as editor and proofreader.

In 1624 he came to Frankfurt as a proofreader. He never gave up his ministry entirely; so he was officially from 1625 until the end of his life pastor of the Reformed community of Offenbach . Occasionally, however, he was represented by vicars so that he could devote himself to translating and authoring work for the Frankfurt publishers (especially for Merian) undisturbed. After Daniel Meisner's death in 1625, Eberhard Kieser was commissioned to write the Latin and German emblem texts in the following parts of the first book of the Thesaurus Philopoliticus .

He also translated Pierre d'Avity's Les Estat ... into German and Latin.

His own most extensive work is the Gottfried Chronicle . It was continued after his death by Johann Philipp Abelin († September 1634) and remained a widely read historical work until the 18th century, from which u. a. Goethe drew his first knowledge of world history.
