Johann Philipp Abelin
Johann Philipp Abelin (born December 7, 1600 in Strasbourg , † September 12, 1634 in Frankfurt am Main ; actually Abele , Latinized also Abeleus , Philipp Arlanibäus ) was a German chronicler and translator . The assumption based on ADB that Abelin published under the pseudonym of Johann Ludwig Gottfried has meanwhile been refuted.
Act
Abelin worked from 1625 to 1630 as a teacher at the grammar school in Frankfurt am Main and also as a translator for the local publishing house of Lucas Jennisius , Matthäus Merian and Friedrich Hulsius . His works usually consisted of summaries of historical records or were pure translations.
Works
In his Archontologia Cosmicum , Abelin translated and revised Pierre d'Avity's moons . Abelin’s collections on Swedish history also became known. The Arma Suecica (1631–1634) describes, divided into 12 sections, the history of the wars of Gustav II Adolf and is supplemented by an Inventarium Sueciae , which appeared in 1632. Both works are summaries of timely notes and letters dealing with the war without further historical commentary.
His most famous works include the first two volumes of the Theatrum Europaeum , a series of chronicles about the most important events in the European world that go back to 1619. Abelin rewrote the work several times, updated the facts, and republished it. He also wrote a translation into Dutch . He himself was verifiably responsible for the first two volumes of the series, other chroniclers continued the Theatrum Europaeum and published a total of 21 editions by 1738. Some volumes contained copperplate illustrations by Matthäus Merian (1593–1650).
