Miles from Plancy

Miles von Plancy († autumn 1174 in Acre ), also known as Milon or Milo , was a French knight and Seneschal and Bailli of the Kingdom of Jerusalem .

Life

He came from Plancy in Champagne and came to the Holy Land in the 1160s , where he served under King Amalrich I , with whom he was widely related.

Amalrich made him Seneschal of Jerusalem . In 1167 he took part in Amalrich's campaign in Egypt , during which he advised Amalrich to conclude a treaty with the Egyptians instead of conquering it by force and allowing it to be plundered. After Amalrich's return, Egypt soon fell under the rule of Nur ad-Din and his commander Shirkuh .

In 1152 the Knights Templar built a fortress in Gaza to repel attacks from Egypt. When the city was attacked in 1170, Miles refused to let the unarmed residents of the city take shelter in the castle, which meant death for many of them. In 1173 he married Stephanie von Milly , daughter of Philipp von Milly and widow of Humfried III. by Toron . He got Montreal Castle and through marriage the rule of Oultrejordain .

Amalrich died in 1174 and Miles then acted as the unofficial regent for his son and successor Baldwin IV , who, although suffering from leprosy , was crowned king. The chronicler Wilhelm of Tire did not like him, called him "a brawler and slanderer, always active to cause trouble". Miles insulted the other barons of the empire, especially those born in the country, by refusing to consult them in any way. Count Raimund III. from Tripoli came to Jerusalem and laid claim to the reign as Baldwin's closest male relative. He was supported by the other powerful barons born in the country, including Humfried IV of Toron , (Miles' stepson since he was the son of Stephanie), Baldwin of Ibelin, and Balian of Ibelin . In the autumn of 1174 Miles was murdered by unknown persons in Acre ; there is no direct evidence of Raimund's involvement in the act. William of Tire heard rumors that the reason for the murder was Miles' indomitable loyalty to Baldwin IV, but also that he planned to wear the crown himself with the help of his French relatives.

Within a few days the Haute Cour made Raimund officially regent. Stephanie married another newcomer, Rainald von Chatillon , in 1176 .
