Baldwin of Ibelin , also called Baldwin (III.) Of Ramla , (* before 1136, † around 1187) was Lord of Ramla and an important person in the Kingdom of Jerusalem .

He was a son of Barisan from Ibelin and Helvis from Ramla. After the death of his older brother Hugo von Ibelin , he took over the rule of Ramla in 1170 . Shortly afterwards he left the castle and rule of Ibelin to his younger brother Balian . Baldwin and Balian supported Count Raimund III. of Tripoli against Miles von Plancy as regent for King Baldwin IV . Balduin's daughter Eschiva married the later king of Jerusalem and Cyprus, Amalrich of Lusignan , around 1174 .

In 1177 the brothers took part in the victorious battle of Montgisard . On June 10, 1179, Baldwin was captured in the battle of Mardsch Uyun on the Jordan , from which the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos bought him free. After his release in 1180 he traveled to Constantinople , where he witnessed the death of the emperor.

In 1183 he supported Raimund against Guido von Lusignan , Sibylle's husband and regent for the sick Baldwin IV.Balduin von Ibelin was also among the barons who advised the king in the same year to have their son Baldwin V crowned while he was still alive, to prevent Guido's succession as king. Baldwin IV died in 1185, Baldwin V the following year, and when Raymond's favorite to succeed him, Humfried IV of Toron , turned down the crown and took Guido's side, Baldwin refused to swear allegiance to him. He transferred his reigns Ramla and Mirabel to his young son Thomas von Ibelin († 1188), so that when he was old enough, King Guido might pay homage to King Guido, which he refused. He then went into exile in Antioch , where he received a large fief from Prince Bohemond IV .

According to the Chronicle of Ernoul , an old French continuation of the Chronicle of William of Tire , which comes from a scribe of Balduin's brother Balian, Balduin's dislike of Guido stemmed from the fact that he wanted to marry Sibylle himself in 1180. The Ibelin family, however, was not as important as the Lusignan family , and Baldwin's wish failed. He refused to return to Jerusalem to support Guido against Saladin . King Guido was defeated in 1187 in the devastating battle of Hattin, as a result of which Ramla, Mirabel and Ibelin were also conquered by the Muslims under Saladin.

Presumably he died in 1187 in self-chosen exile.

Marriages and offspring

Baldwin had been married to Richilde, the daughter of Guermond I of Bethsan , at the latest since 1157 . The marriage was annulled around 1174. With her he had two daughters:

In 1175 he married Isabelle (Elisabeth) Gothman († 1177/78), daughter of Johann Gothman , widow of Hugo Garnier , lord of Caesarea. With her he had a son:

  • Thomas († around 1188), Lord of Ramla

After 1180 he married Maria († after 1228), the daughter of Rainer , constable of Tripoli, in his third marriage . This marriage remained childless.
