The House of Lusignan was a family belonging to the western French nobility who named themselves after the Lusignan Castle , which they owned as feudal men of the Counts of Poitou (and Dukes of Aquitaine).

Through active participation in the crusades , relations with the crusader states in the eastern Mediterranean arose for the Lords of Lusignan from the beginning . The family became known because of the Melusin legend, which traces the sex back to the mahrte marriage of the water fairy Melusine and a man named Raymondin .

After a failed rebellion against Henry II of England, Amalrich (or Amaury or Aimerich) fled from Lusignan to the Kingdom of Jerusalem . There he arranged the marriage between his brother Guido and the heiress Sibylle. With the death of Baldwin IV and his son Sibylles, Guido von Lusignan became king of Jerusalem in 1186. Guido was captured by the Arabs. After his release, he was refused return by Konrad von Montferrat . Richard I the Lionheart of England sold him his rights to the recently conquered Kingdom of Cyprus .

With the death of his great grandson Hugo II. In 1267, the Cypriot crown of the family was lost because his successor and cousin Hugo III. , another great-grandson of Amalrich, belonged to the family of the Counts of Poitou (House Auvergne-Poitou, see Ramnulfiden ), although his descendants carried on the name Lusignan.

Hugo V had risen to become Count of the Marche through marriage . While Amalrich and Guido von Lusignan used the Crusades as younger family members to purchase property in the Middle East, the family members who remained in France expanded their property there. Raoul de Lusignan, Amalrich's youngest brother, acquired the county of Eu in Normandy by marriage , and Hugo X became Count of Angoulême . While the county of Eu was lost in the next generation but one, the family was able to hold the counties of Marche and Angoulême until 1309. After the death of the last count in 1308, his sisters ceded them to the French crown.
