Hugo V. of Lusignan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugo V. von Lusignan († October 8, 1060 in Lusignan ), called " the Pious " (Latin Pius ), was the fifth lord of Lusignan and lord of Couhé . He was the son of Hugo the Brown and his wife Audéarde.

He married Almodis de la Marche , daughter of Count Bernard I of La Marche . From this connection his eldest son should inherit the county of La Marche in 1091 . With Almodis, Hugo had two sons and a daughter: the twin brothers Hugo VI. and Jordan , as well as Melisende . The latter married Simon, Lord of Parthenay . The marriage with Almodis was later dissolved due to close blood relatives. Hugo arranged for his wife to remarry to Pons II , Count of Toulouse .

When Hugo's liege lord, Duke William VIII of Aquitaine, waged war against William IV of Toulouse , Almodis persuaded Hugo to join his stepson's side. The Duke then besieged Hugo in his castle in Lusignan. To get provisions, Hugo led a sortie on October 8, 1060 and was killed in battle at the gates of his castle.

His eldest son Hugo VI, called "the devil", succeeded him.
