Hugo XI. from Lusignan
Hugo XI. von Lusignan , called the brown one ( Le Brun ) (* 1221 ; † April 6, 1250 near Fariskur , Egypt) was Lord of Lusignan , Count of La Marche and Angoulême and regent of the counties of Penthièvre and Porhoët .
He was the son of Hugo X of Lusignan and Isabella of Angoulême . He was the half-brother of King Henry III. of England . In January 1236 he married Yolande von Dreux (* 1218; † 1272), Countess of Penthievre and Porhoët, daughter of Peter von Dreux and Braine , Duke of Brittany . By his wife's right he was Count of Penthièvre and Porhoët.
In August 1248 his father embarked on the crusade to Egypt (sixth crusade) under King Louis IX. from France , he himself did not accompany him. The father died on June 5, 1249 in the fighting for Damiette , which is why Hugo XI. succeeded him as Lord of Lusignan, Count of La Marche and Count of Angoulême. However, it is unlikely that he knew of his father's death at this point. Because a letter has survived from him, dated June 29, 1249 in Paris, in which Hugo XI. documented his own preparations for the crusade, but made no mention of his father's death. Together with eleven knights in his entourage, Hugo XI. to Prince Alfonso of Poitiers , with whom he reached the Egyptian port city of Damiette in October 1249 and probably learned of his father's death here.
Hugo XI. now took part in the further crusade, in the course of which he also fell when the army was overpowered by the Mamlukes on their retreat from al-Mansura on April 6, 1250 near Fariskur .
