Aimery IV (Thouars)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aimery IV. (* Probably 1020/25; † murdered 1093 ) became Viscount de Thouars around 1050 . He was a typical knight of his time who lived in constant conflict with his neighbors, but also fought against the Muslims on the Iberian Peninsula and with the Normans in England - and at least in the last two cases withdrew to his property with rich booty .

Life

Aimery was the son of Geoffroy II, Vicomte de Thouars (attested in 1010 / around 1055), and Aénor / Éléonore (attested in 1028/60). In 1055 began his alliance with Geoffroy Martel , Count of Anjou , against Wilhelm II , Duke of Normandy ; he took part in the siege of Ambrières , a castle that William had built on the Maine border .

Aimery IV. Was one of the nobles of Poitou who came to the aid of Duke William VIII of Aquitaine Sancho I Ramirez , King of Aragon , in the siege of Barbastro in 1064 . This was the first campaign organized by the Pope , here Pope Alexander III. , against a Muslim city - an anticipation of the later Crusades . Barbastro was conquered, the inhabitants were killed, immense booty was taken; however, the city was lost again after a few years.

In 1066 he joined the Norman conquest of England and is one of the few proven companions of the Norman duke. At the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, he commanded a force consisting of Poitevins , Bretons and Angevins . After the victory, he did not settle in England but retired to France with a large sum of money.

In 1080 he had the castle rebuilt in Thouars, as well as in La Chaize near La Roche-sur-Yon , which belonged to his property, and next to it a church which was consecrated to Nicholas of Myra . In the early 1090s he attacked Pierre de Mortagne, whose castle he occupied.

In early 1093 he was murdered by two of his knights. He was buried in the aforementioned Nikolauskirche in La Chaize.
