La Roche-sur-Yon is a French city with 54,372 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vendée department , which belongs to the Pays de la Loire region . It is the administrative seat of the department , i.e. the seat of the prefecture . The city is crossed by the River Yon .
history
The city in its present form was built under Napoleon , who in 1804 moved the seat of the prefecture of Fontenay-le-Comte to the newly built city.
Since then, the city has had different names throughout history:
- Napoléon (during the First French Empire , named after Napoléon Bonaparte, 1804–1814 / 15)
- Bourbon-Vendée (during the restoration )
- La Roche-sur-Yon (during the Second French Republic ; roche means rock)
- Napoléon-Vendée (during the Second French Empire ) ( Napoleon III , 1852–1870)
- La Roche-sur-Yon (since 1870).
In 2004 the city celebrated the 200th anniversary of its founding by Napoleon.

Sports
The city has two football clubs that have been represented in France's top two leagues in the past. For men, it was the clubs FC Yonnais and AEPB La Roche (each in Division 2 ), which have now merged to form La Roche Vendée Football , and for women , this is the Étoile Sportive Ornaysienne de Football , which even once (1999) became a French club Has brought runner-up.
