Afandou ( Greek Αφάντου ( n. Pl. )) Is a city on the east coast of the island and municipality of Rhodes and seat of the municipality of the same name in the Greek region of South Aegean . It is located about 15 kilometers from the island's capital, Rhodes .
Originally the place was by the sea. However, after several pirate attacks in the 7th century, the local community decided to move their place inland behind mountain hills. The place name is therefore derived from afantis ( Greek αόρατος = invisible), because Afandou cannot be seen from the sea.
Afandou was recognized together with Kolymbia in 1946 as an independent rural community (kinotita) , raised to a town community (dimos) in 1994 and amalgamated in 1997 with the neighboring town of Archipolis in the interior of the island . On January 1, 2011 Afandou became a municipality of the now the entire island of Rhodes . This is divided into the district of Afandou (Δημοτική Κοινότητα Αφάντου, with Kolymbia) and the local community Archipolis (Τοπική Κοινότητα Αρχιπόλεως).
Since October 16, 2001 there has been an official city partnership with the German city of Gummersbach in North Rhine-Westphalia , in which there has been an Afandou Square since then. Conversely, there is a Gummersbacher Platz in Afandou, from where many Greek guest workers went to Gummersbach in the 1950s and 1960s . There is also a partnership with Burg in Saxony-Anhalt, which in turn has a partnership with Gummersbach.
East of Afandou is the only golf course on the island between Ethniki Odos 95 and the coast. The 18-hole course has been in operation since 1973 and was designed by the golf course architect Donald Harradine .
