Chantonnay is a French municipality with 8318 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It is located in the arrondissement of La Roche-sur-Yon and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Chantonnay . The inhabitants call themselves Chantonnaisien (ne) .
geography
The municipality is crossed by the river Lay and limited to the west by the Petit Lay .
Chantonnay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Germain-de-Prinçay in the north, Sigournais in the northeast, Bazoges-en-Pareds in the east, La Jaudonnière in the southeast, Saint-Juire-Champgillon and La Réorthe in the south, Bournezeau in the west and southwest, Saint-Hilaire-le-Vouhis to the west and Sainte-Cécile to the northwest. The area is part of the Fiefs Vendéens wine region .

history
With the Battle of Chantonnay during the French Revolution on September 5, 1793, the already outnumbered republican troops were defeated by the troops of the Vendée in the uprising of the Vendée .
In 1812 a stone meteorite weighing 31.5 kilograms fell near Chantonnay and was classified as L6 chondrite . The meteorite was found in a field and later cut into numerous fragments.
On November 16, 1957, a serious railway accident occurred near Chantonnay : A steam locomotive and a two-part diesel multiple unit collided head- on on a single-track railway line . 23 people died, including all passengers in the front part of the railcar. 30 people were also injured.
