Mortagne-sur-Sèvre is a French commune with 5,930 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the arrondissement of La Roche-sur-Yon and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Mortagne-sur-Sèvre . The inhabitants are called Mortagnais .

geography

The western boundary of the municipality forms the Sèvre Nantaise . The Ouin also flows through the municipality . Mortagne-sur-Sèvre is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Christophe-du-Bois in the north, Cholet in the east and northeast, Mauléon in the southeast, Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre in the south, Chanverrie in the southwest, Saint-Aubin-des- Ormeaux in the west and Sèvremoine in the northwest.

Autoroute A87 , national road 149 and the former route nationale 160 run through the municipality .

The municipality consists of the localities of Mortagne , Évrunes and Saint-Hilaire .

The First Battle of Mortagne took place here from March 23-25, 1794 .
The Second Battle of Mortagne took place here on October 3rd and 4th, 1795 .
