history

The history of the place goes back to Gallo-Roman times, as there was a ford over the river Vie here. In the 15th century, Apremont belonged to the vice-county of Thouars , which in turn belonged to the Amboise family and then to the Chabot family. In 1468 the previous building of the castle was besieged by Breton troops and / or militants, whose aim was to capture prisoners from the hands of Renaud Chabots (approx. 1410–1476), a loyal vassal of King Louis XI. to press free.

Philippe Chabot , the grandson of Renaud, Admiral of France and close friend and confidante of Francis I , inherited Apremont and had a castle built between 1534–1541, which he was hardly inhabited. In the 16th century, Apremont came to the Amboise family

Attractions

  • The Apremont Castle is one of the first Renaissance buildings in the Vendée. Its round towers with their walls several meters thick also show clear echoes of medieval defense architecture. An anchor frieze ran around the outer walls of the castle - a reminder of the admiral title of the builder, who, however, never went to sea himself. The last owner decided in 1733 to have the castle torn down due to various structural damage. The stones were sold to contractors in the area - some of them were reused in the construction of the former Pirmil Bridge in Nantes . The few parts of the castle that have remained undamaged are the two round towers, a chapel and a winding ramp. The ruins of the castle have been listed as a Monument Historique since 1926 .
Apremont - Hosanna Cross
  • In the cemetery not far from the Saint-Martin church, which was rebuilt in 1902 in place of a previous building from the 15th century, there is a so-called Hosanna Cross (croix hosannière); it bears the year 1545 and is one of the last of its kind. It differs from other Hosanna crosses in that it has a figure in front of the shaft with a lectern carried by both hands ; above it is a phoenix , an ancient symbol of Christ. It has been recognized as a Monument historique since 1926 .

outside

  • The Château de l'Audardière ( 46 ° 43 ′ 55 ″  N , 1 ° 45 ′ 33 ″  W ), a building from the 16th and 17th centuries, has been a listed building since 1981 and is recognized as a monument historique . The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.
  • The Manoir de la Tuderrière , a simple two-storey manor from the 18th century, has also been registered as a Monument historique since 1984 . It is also privately owned.

Apremont Castle can be seen in some scenes in the 1960 Jean Gabin film 'Heaven is already sold out' ( Les Vieux de la vieille ) by Gilles Grangier .
