La Marronnière Castle

Aizenay is a French town with 9510 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the canton of Aizenay in the arrondissement of La Roche-sur-Yon .

geography

Aizenay is located 15 kilometers northwest of La Roche-sur-Yon , 53 kilometers south of Nantes and about 25 kilometers west of the coast of the Vendée ( côte vendéenne ). The Vie and Jaunay flow through the municipality.

Aizenay is assigned to a climate zone of type Cfb (according to Köppen and Geiger ): warm, moderate rainy climate (C), fully humid (f), warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C (b). There is a maritime climate with a moderate summer.

history

Aizenay was the capital of the Celtic tribe of the Agesinates, so the name for the inhabitants of Aizenay is still Agésinates today . In the dialect of Poitevin (a type of Langues d'oïl ), however, the inhabitants are called Trjhous ( les Toujours , "the always").

Aizenay is part of the Vie et Boulogne municipality .

A partnership with Görisried has existed since April 5, 1998 .

The city's coat of arms is the old coat of arms of the La Brosse Penthièvre family ( Vicomtes de Brosse , today the Brosse castle ruins in Chaillac , and Comtes de Penthièvre ). The La Brosse Penthièvre were Seigneurs of Aizenay for four generations from 1437 .

Culture and sights

Aizenay is represented with two flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

Buildings

The Saint-Benoît church

The Saint-Benoît church was built from 1904 to 1905 by the architect Alcide Boutaud. It is owned by the municipality and has been included in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques since 2007 . There are several goldworks in the church. A silver container for chrism from the second half of the 19th century and a communion chalice , which was made between 1798 and 1809, were classified as Monument historique ( MH ) in 1982 .

The Logis de Bonnefonds was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. From that time only the windows, door and chimney have survived, which were entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1994 ( inscrit MH ). The building is now privately owned.

The castle La Marronnière ("Castle of the Sweet Chestnut Grove") was built in the 18th century on the foundations of a castle from the 14th century. It's in a big park. In 2008 it was renovated. It is privately owned and used for guest rooms (French: Chambre d'hôtes ).

Local products

The municipal area are controlled appellations (AOC) for Butter (Beurre Charentes-Poitou, des Charentes and Deux-Sèvres) and protected geographical indications (PGI) for beef (boeuf de Vendée and du Maine) , pork (Porc de Vendée) , Poultry (Volailles de Challans and de Vendée) , lamb's lettuce (Mâche nantaise) and brioche (Brioche vendéenne) .
