Rives de l'Yon was formed as Commune nouvelle on January 1, 2016 from the municipalities of Chaillé-sous-les-Ormeaux and Saint-Florent-des-Bois . The seat of the new municipality is in the locality of Saint-Florent-des-Bois.

Rives de l'Yon is about seven kilometers southeast of La Roche-sur-Yon on the Yon . Rives-de-l'Yon is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Nesmy in the north and north-west, La Roche-sur-Yon in the north, La Chaize-le-Vicomte in the north-east, Thorigny in the east, Château-Guibert in the east and south-east, Le Tablier and Rosnay in the south and southeast, Le Champ-Saint-Père in the south and La Boissière-des-Landes in the west.
