Church and castle

Tiffauges is a French commune with 1588 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vendée department of the Pays de la Loire region .

geography

The city is located on the banks of the Sèvre Nantaise , at the confluence of the left tributary Crûme .

history

Tiffauges is named after the typhals .

In the 11th century Tiffauges became a fiefdom of the Counts of Thouars. Geoffroy von Thouars built the castle in the 12th century.

Catherine de Thouars married Gilles de Rais in 1420 . This killed boys in the castle and was therefore executed. Catherine de Thouars married Jean II. De Vendôme, vidame de Chartres.
