The Sèvre Nantaise is a river in France that runs in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Pays de la Loire regions. It rises around 210 meters above sea level in the municipal area of Le Beugnon , generally drains in a northerly direction and flows into the Loire after 142 kilometers in Nantes as a left tributary .
It is not to be confused with the Sèvre Niortaise , which has its source about 40 kilometers further southeast, flows in an east-west direction and flows north of La Rochelle into the Bay of Biscay . The two rivers with a similar name gave the Deux-Sèvres (German: Zwei Sèvres) its name.
shipping
The navigable route stretches from the Loire estuary to Monnières and is 21.5 kilometers long. The left tributary, the Maine , was made navigable again over a stretch of 5.5 kilometers and forms a common area with the Sèvre Nantaise. There is no longer any commercial shipping here , the rivers are maintained for small pleasure craft . There has been a modern tidal weir at the Nantes estuary since 1992. This construction keeps the water level constant up to the Vertou lock , which has advantages for navigation, the environment and the maintenance of this section of the river, which was previously tidal and exposed to the silt deposits of the Loire. The Vertou lock has dimensions of 31.50 × 5.50 meters and the permissible draft is 1.20 meters.
