The Maine (in the upper reaches: Grande Maine ) is a river in France , in the Pays de la Loire region . It rises in the municipality of Les Herbiers and generally drains to the northwest. In the city of Saint-Georges-de-Montaigu it meets its twin river Petite Maine and is only called Maine from then on . After a total length of 68 kilometers, it flows into the Sèvre Nantaise as a left tributary at the municipal boundary of Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine and Vertou . On its way, the Maine crosses the Vendée and Loire-Atlantique departments .

In the estuary section, the Maine is navigable over a length of about 5 kilometers and forms a contiguous water area with the Sèvre Nantaise , the Loire and the Erdre . Commercial shipping has ceased, but pleasure craft can travel up the Maine to Château-Thébaud .
