history

Saint Felix, the 16th Bishop of Nantes , restored the unhealthy marshland north of the city in 550 by raising the water level of the Erdre by about two meters by building river barriers and roads.

After floods had often occurred in Nantes because of the capricious course of the Erdre, from 1929 the German engineer Karl Hotz was entrusted with the rehabilitation of the last kilometers of the river in connection with the reparation payments demanded by France . Since 1933 the Erdre has been flowing through a 900 m long tunnel into the Saint-Félix Canal . The old course of the river is now part of the Cours des 50-Otages , one of the main arteries of Nantes.

Attractions

On the bank there are numerous mansions, parks and castles, so that the Erdre was described by the French King Francis I as "the most beautiful river in France".

All kinds of water sports can be practiced on the lake-like formations on the lower reaches of the Erdre.
