Sucé-sur-Erdre (Breton: Sulieg ) is a French municipality with 7023 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire .

geography

Sucé-sur-Erdre is located about 15 kilometers north of Nantes on the banks of the Erdre River . The community has a port on the river that extends a few kilometers north to Lac de Mazerolles , on the west bank of which the 11.3 km² moor of Mazerolles begins.

history

The name of the community, first mentioned in the 10th century, comes from the Latin sulcus , in German a furrow , and from the Celtic Erdam , which means small river .

Sucé was a stronghold of Calvinist preachers in the 16th and 17th centuries . Under Charles IX. During the First Huguenot War, Huguenots , who were banned from practicing their religion in Nantes , retreated to Sucé and built a fortified meeting place there, of which only the Tour Gaillard remains today . The Bishop of Nantes ordered its destruction in 1677.

Since the early 1970s, Sucé-sur-Erdre has seen above-average population growth. In 1973 the community was renamed Sucé-sur-Erdre.
