Notre-Dame-des-Landes is a French commune with 2,184 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the arrondissement of Châteaubriant-Ancenis and the canton of Nort-sur-Erdre (until 2015: canton of Blain ).

geography

The municipality is located around 25 kilometers northwest of Nantes . The Plongeon River runs along the western boundary of the municipality . Neighboring municipalities to Notre-Dame-des-Landes are:

• Blain in the north,
• Héric in the northeast,
• Grandchamps-des-Fontaines in the southeast,
• Vigneux-de-Bretagne in the south and
• Fay-de-Bretagne to the west.

history

The municipality is part of historic Brittany . Founded in the middle of the 19th century, the place has retained its original character with agriculture, livestock and rural economy.

Infrastructure

In the early 2000s, the planning of a new (regional) airport under the name Aéroport du Grand Ouest , which was to replace Nantes airport , began.

The affected residents of Notre-Dame-des-Landes protested with great determination against the airport construction in their municipality. They wanted to prevent the landscape from being destroyed and fertile land from being sealed off.

In mid-January 2018, the French government announced that it would finally abandon the project.
