geography

Neighboring departments are Morbihan , Ille-et-Vilaine , Mayenne , Maine-et-Loire and the Vendée .

The most important river is the Loire , which flows into the Atlantic in the Saint-Nazaire department .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the department was created by the French heraldist Robert Louis , it was officially in use until the 1950s.

The Conseil départemental , the representation of the département, does not recognize this coat of arms.

Description: silver six rows black seeded ermine of a blue wave beams covered.

history

The department was formed on March 4, 1790.

Loire-Atlantique belongs to historical Brittany , but not to the modern administrative region of the same name, as historical affiliation was not taken into account when the French regions were created in 1982. The majority of the residents are in favor of reintegration in Brittany.

From 1790 to 1957 the department was called “Loire-inférieure”, then it was renamed because “inférieure” ('under') has a negative connotation.

It has belonged to the Pays de la Loire region since 1960 .
