The French town of Saint-Herblain in the department of Loire-Atlantique in the Region Pays de la Loire , with 46,268 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) the third largest city in the department. It is located west of Nantes about 60 kilometers from the Atlantic coast. The city is the seat of the cantons of Saint-Herblain-1 and Saint-Herblain-2 .

history

Saint-Herblain was founded as Sankt Hermeland between 640 and 720 by a Benedictine monk .

Infrastructure

Of the approximately 3,000 ha total area of the city, just under 1.7 ha are built on. As a city directly adjacent to Nantes, it fulfills some of the infrastructure tasks of the city association, the Agglomération Nantaise. One of the largest hospitals in France can be found in Saint-Herblain. The Leclerc supermarket has long been the largest in France. The Zénith event hall is also one of the superlatives.

A large number of resident companies and institutes make Saint-Herblain a service metropolis. Heavy industry is not located.

Attractions

The city has many monuments from the 15th and 16th centuries, including the Saint-Hermeland church from the 15th century, which has been a monument historique since December 21, 1925 .

The Sillon de Bretagne dates from 1970 and is one of the largest skyscrapers in Central Europe with almost 800 apartments. In total, over 3500 people live and work there. The residential tower is the highest point in the entire region.

traffic

Nantes train station is 15 minutes away and the airport 10 minutes by car. The place has a stop on the Tours – Saint-Nazaire railway line . The European route 3 runs east of Saint-Herblain .
