Kazanlak [ kɐzɐnˈɫɤk ] ( Bulgarian Казанлък ) is a city in Bulgaria . It is the center of a municipality and is located in the Rosental (bulg. Розова долина) north of Stara Zagora between the Balkan Mountains and the mountain range Sredna Gora . The city has 50,053 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), and is the industrial center of the machine tool and textile industry, musical instrument production, and the city of roses and rose oil products .

History and meaning

Kazanlak was founded around 1300 AD in order to strategically secure the nearby Schipka Pass and is now the largest city in the Rose Valley. In the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) it was an important theater of war. Kazanlak was previously known for its rose oil production. Kazanlak has the only institute on the Balkan Peninsula for the cultivation of plants for the production of essential oils .

The city is namesake for Kazanlak Peak , a mountain on Livingston Island in Antarctica.

Culture and sights

The cultural center of Kazanlak is the Chitalishte "Iskra", founded in 1873 , with a library , theater and cinema hall and a museum with more than 40,000 exhibits.

Not far from the city is the famous Thracian tomb of Kazanlak . In the unique monument was probably in the 4th century BC. A respected Thracian prince , unknown by name, is buried. The tomb consists of an anteroom, a corridor and the tomb covered by the dome. The paintings on the walls are of exceptional beauty. The tomb is under the protection of UNESCO and is part of the world cultural heritage of mankind.

In the north of the city a road branches off to Shipka . There is a rose museum and a large memorial church in honor of the Russian soldiers and Bulgarian soldiers who died in the Russo - Turkish War (1877–1878) for the liberation of Bulgaria.

The ancient city of Seuthopolis is located around 5 km west of the city .
