history

Dimitrovgrad is a relatively young industrial city . The first socialist city in Bulgaria was conceived as a large-scale infrastructure and urban planning project. The foundation stone was laid on May 10, 1947, when 40 young people came to build the “City of Dreams”. Tens of thousands of other young people followed. Dimitrovgrad was officially founded on September 2, 1947 by a decree of the then Prime Minister and Communist Party leader Georgi Dimitrov . The city was named after him. The three villages of Rakowski, Marino and Tschernokoniowo existed in the area of today's city.

In the years 1948–50 a whole new city was built from scratch by youth brigades from all over the country, which numbered 50,000 people. Dimitrovgrad was a re-establishment as a model of a socialist city, such as B. Eisenhüttenstadt in the GDR or Komsomolsk in the Soviet Union .
